Moments of Artistic Transformation

An artist’s career unfolds in phases. The pursuit of continuous renewal is essential to unlocking the potential within. This development may follow a gradual evolution, but it can also take shape through more radical stylistic shifts. When new work emerges within a relatively short period that clearly differs from what came before, it can mark a turning point — a kanteling in Dutch. In KANTELING, Daan Rietbergen, Zaida Oenema and Lenneke van der Goot present work that signals such a new direction in their artistic practice. Whether these works are temporary experiments or the beginning of a lasting new phase remains to be seen.

The exhibition will be opened by Esther Didden, a philosopher in the cultural sector, who works for, among others, the BK-informatie and combines a background in art (KABK), cultural policy and philosophy. Saturday August 29, 16:30.

Subtly Sculptural

May 10 – Opening of Subtly Sculptural at Kultur Bahnhof Eller in Düsseldorf, Germany. Welcome !

Subtly Sculptural explores the sculptural as something subtle rather than monumental—revealing sculptural elements within the seemingly flat.

Through a range of processes, including cutting, layering, perforating, and bending, materials shift between image and object. The works quietly disrupt perception and expand the act of looking.
This is the fourth edition of Subtly Sculptural. With each venue, a new constellation of artists and works reshapes the curatorial concept.
Initiated by Zaida Oenema, Gerda Kruimer, and Nelleke Beltjens, the project continues to unfold with curiosity and openness.

A catalogue/booklet will be available at the opening.

Welkom to the opening of the 100th exhibition of dr.julius art projects in Berlin!
Instead of looking back and making the development or the history of drj since 2008 the subject, we are much more interested in how all of uswill continue. To find out, we started this participative Mail–Art project. 

Facing the countless crises of our times, ranging from the disintegration of local cultural landscapes, the upheavals in various societies, a rising number of armed conflicts and fascist-authoritarian tendencies worldwide, to the global climate catastrophe that can obviously no longer be reversed, we want tolook ahead all the more. In our exchange of thoughts and ongoing conversations with creative minds worldwide, we have noticed that many of us are constantly and increasingly asking ourselves fundamental questions, like: » How do I continue despite all of this? What is the meaningful relevance of my work? How do I manage to stay motivated?« etc. And the vast majority of us find individual answers to these questions almost every day. …and going on. Thus is a project that aims to demonstrate the many different ways to keep going ahead, reaching from personal inner struggle to the deep resolve to carry on.

Therefore, in October 2024, dr.julius art projects invited artists, curators, directors, collectors of conceptual minimal and related sectors of contemporary art to share their personal answers with us, condensed to the classic medium of the postcard. More than 350 invitees did respond and sent a contribution via mail to Berlin’s Rote Insel.

The question »What keeps YOU going?«, was answered in a huge variety of ways. The exhibition now brings together a very special selection of artistic thoughts, attitudes, approaches, ideas and works.. And the collective statement that emerges from this, can be seen as a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk, consisting of all the people committing, the content and the medium, as well as the time and space of the exhibition. Created from the contributions of a wide range of actors in this artistic field, it has become a valuable expression of the creative and resistant power of artper se.

As a contemporary document from late 2024 and early 2025, it targests to be a cross-section of ideas and concepts that inspire hope against the adversities of the world as it appears today.

Towards Orphism

March 15 – April 26: Municipal Bonds presents Toward Orphism, a group exhibition on view March 15–April 26 in the gallery’s annex, considering Orphism’s legacy in contemporary abstraction. Coined in the early 20th century, the term describes a movement that expanded Cubism’s geometric foundations, emphasizing color, rhythm, and optical vibration. This sensibility continues in the work of Austin Thomas, Blaise Rosenthal, and Zaida Oenema, who each approach abstraction through material, structure, and the cadence of form.

SUBTLY SCULPTURAL is an artist project – initiated and curated by Gerda Kruimer, Zaida Oenema and Nelleke Beltjens – with internationally active artists from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

“The artworks of the project SUBTLY SCULPTURAL work their way along that narrow interface where two- and three-dimensional form-language meet and enter into a certain productive conflict with each other. Its aesthetic appeal arises precisely from this tension.” Excerpt from a text by Dr. Peter Lodermeyer.

Through the Grid

Studio Onvervalst asked me to make a screenprint for the exhibition Through the Grid at . Welcome to ACEC Apeldoorn to see the result!

Je bent van harte uitgenodigd voor de groepstentoonstelling Through the Grid. Het grid werd al door oude meesters als hulpmiddel ingezet om ruimtelijke verhoudingen over te kunnen zetten naar het platte vlak. Zo bracht het raster orde en structuur in het ontleden van de werkelijkheid. Het bood houvast om natuurgetrouw objecten, mensfiguren of een landschap te visualiseren zonder het verlies van dieptewerking.

In de groepstentoonstelling Through the Grid onderzoekt Studio Onvervalst door de zeefdruk, ism hedendaagse kunstenaars, de rol van het raster in de abstracte beeldtaal. Niet ingezet als hulpmiddel voor een vertaling van de werkelijkheid, het vormt nu zelf het onderwerp van het artistieke uitgangspunt. Een vooraf bepaalde ordelijke structuur die wordt gevolgd of verstoord. Als een gerasterd systeem met opgelegde beperkingen dat zich uitstrekt tot in het oneindige.

Poetic Systems

Welcome to the opening of the exhibition Poetic Systems on Sunday 27th of November at gallery JoLi (Urmond) by Joery Wilbers, director of museum De Domijnen (Sittard) at 14:00 hrs.

The exhibition Poetic Systems shows artworks by three artists; Zaida Oenema, Fiene Scharp and Gerda Kruimer.
All work within their own system of grids with personal rules, of repetition, rhythm and structure, among others. They cut and/or burn in “fragile” material such as paper. The handwork creates barely visible imperfections and irregularities.
The title Poetic Systems encompasses the formal approach softened by the poetic handwriting.

In the gallery space, the artists have created a subtle gridwork on the floor and walls that perfectly matches their artworks.

I will be present for the artist reception!

“The title of the exhibition refers to the poem of the same name by Robert Weston. It says a lot about the work and method of Zaida Oenema (NL, 1981). She builds her oeuvre with attention and perfection; whereby liquid time solidifies in her concentrated works.

You see a line, even many lines, or a stripe and several stripes. Then again you see a cut, not shorter or longer than necessary, but exactly as intended. The works consist of innumerable cuts, hatches, stripes, lines or curves; arranged one after the other, singular or multiple and all with extreme precision. Oenema uses minimal techniques such as a soldering iron, scalping knife, pencil and gluing. And different types of paper distinguish the works in complexity, both in appearance and meaning.

The mostly Japanese scooping paper is chosen for its specific properties. So that, for example, after gluing sheets of thin paper, the planned treatment is still possible. These aspects are tangible and visible in Oenema’s work. The result looks minimalistic but stems from maximum performance.”

Every other year CODA Paper Art presents paper art ranging from small works of art, objects and jewellery to life-size installations. While some artists highlight a social or topical theme, others tell a (material) technical story with their work, or highlight the craftsmanship of paper art. The exhibition shows how many different perspectives and dimensions there are in paper art, how boundaries are shifted and how new techniques and digitalisation are used by the makers to realise their work. There is also a renewed appreciation for nature as a source of inspiration and a number of artists react with their work to current events and the large amount of images that we see every day.

The works of art in this exhibition were made by 48 artists from the Netherlands and abroad.

On July 2 the sculpture garden will open its doors and you can visit Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 – 17 hrs.

The traveling exhibition Contemporary Contemplations was shown for the first time in March 2018 in Arti et Amicitae in Amsterdam, then in Kunstquartier Bethanien in Berlin, in Kunsthaus Erfurt, PHK18 in Rotterdam and has now settled in ACEC Apeldoorn. In addition to the artists of the first hour, artists are added to each exhibition to match the theme. This time: Cees Andriessen from Apeldoorn.

Contemporary Contemplations at PHK18, Rotterdam 20.01.-29.03.2019

Centered around artists focussing on repetition, rhythm, and gestures with an emphasis on the moment and feeling of duration.

Paper Biennial museum Rijswijk 12 Jun – 07 Oct 2018

Since 1996 Museum Rijswijk has hosted prestigious exhibitions on international paper art. Each show exhibits a surprising collection of artworks because contemporary art is constantly changing.

The biennials are never themed. However, the 18 international artists participating in this edition have something in common, besides the use of paper: they take inspiration from nature. This can be in physical terms, making paper from pure plant fibres – cooked, flattened, dried and, sometimes, mixed with other natural ingredients. Paper pulp might be kneaded or poured into unique shapes, and once dry, cut, folded and twisted. Nature is also a source of inspiration in conceptual terms: odes to what nature generates, spores of change and capturing something transient. Those who love pure abstraction will also find something in this biennial. But don’t be surprised if you encounter a link to the natural environment here, too.

An illustrated catalogue of the Rijswijk Paper Biennial 2018 (Dutch/English) will be available. Author: art historian Frank van der Ploeg.

Jaap Scholten & The Mourning Glories

Avonturier en schrijver Jaap Scholten zal komen vertellen over o.a. zijn beren- en wolvenverhalen. Met zijn werk ontving hij onder meer de Libris Geschiedenis Prijs en werd hij geselecteerd voor de shortlist van de Bob den Uyl-prijs. Ook schreef hij jarenlang een column in het NRC en presenteerde hij het VPRO-programma Oostwaarts, waarin hij op zoek ging naar de vergeten werelden van het oude Oost-Europa.

Het evenement vindt plaats in de duo-tentoonstelling The Sound of Silence, waarin Zaida Oenema en Lenny Oosterwijk fotografie, knipsels en tekeningen laten zien die geïnspireerd zijn op de natuur.

Weer twee mooie namen voor de volgende Gallery Untitled Presents!
Gery Mendes won o.a. de Grote Prijs van Nederland als beste muzikant en is bij het grote publiek bekend van het programma de Beste Singer-Songwriter. Bovendien leerde de rest van Nederland hem afgelopen jaren kennen dankzij zijn rol in het hiphop-orkest van Kyteman. Dr. ir. Koert van Mensvoort is als kunstenaar, technoloog en filosoof het meest bekend vanwege zijn TED-talks en zijn Next Nature filosofie. Zo ontwikkelde hij Het Kweekvlees Kookboek. Dit prijswinnende boek maakt tastbaar welke kweekvlees gerechten mogelijk in de toekomst op ons bord belanden. Voor nu: goed voer voor discussie!

Duo-exhibition The Sound of Silence

In duo-tentoonstelling The Sound of Silence laten Zaida Oenema en Lenny Oosterwijk fotografie, knipsels en tekeningen zien die geïnspireerd zijn op de natuur.

De gedetailleerde tekeningen van Zaida Oenema zijn gemaakt in een stressvolle periode. Haar verlangen naar een uitweg naar stilte groeide in hoog tempo. Stilte in letterlijke zin van het ontbreken van menselijk geluid, maar gaandeweg ook een verlangen naar stilte als een equivalent van rust en vreugde. In de knipsels gaat Zaida Oenema een stap verder en probeert ze niet zozeer de plek of het verlangen naar zo’n plek te tekenen, maar zoekt door het minutieus werken met een scalpel als een een vorm van concentratie-oefening de stilte op.

Zilveren Camera-winnaar Lenny Oosterwijk vindt in de natuur zijn inspiratie. Zo maakt hij voor het project Heraclitus al een aantal jaren foto’s van rivieren tot ongrijpbare, bijna abstracte beelden. De rivier als symbool voor oneindige beweging. Of, zoals de filosoof Heraclitus het verwoordde,‘No man steps in the same river twice’. In 2014 maakt hij binnen dezelfde thematiek de film Heraclitus. De film werd geselecteerd en vertoond op het Internationaal Filmfestival Rotterdam.

Up Memory Lane – RAM 30 years (part2)

28 aug 2016 | We vieren onze 30 jaar RAM met veel kunstenaars uit het heden en verleden middels een toevoeging aan de tentoonstelling Up Memory Lane (Part 2 ).

Hiervoor zijn een groot aantal kunstenaars die (solo) bij RAM ‘1986-2016’ hebben tentoongesteld uitgenodigd met de vraag of ze voor deze gelegenheid een A-4 zouden willen maken.Deze A-4 ’s zullen onderdeel worden van bovengenoemde tentoonstelling. Daarnaast is het de bedoeling om de A-4 werken te vermenigvuldigen tot een publicatie die op een later tijdstip zal worden gepresenteerd.

Tevens wordt in deze expositie (Part 2) ‘2001-2016’ net als in (Part 1) ‘1986-2001’, recent werk van kunstenaars uit deze tweede periode getoond.

Launch Grote Haagse Kunstkalender 2014

13 Nov 2013 | Today the new and (again heavy) Haagse Kunstkalender will be launched at Stroom Den Haag (16-19 hrs.). It’s the second year this calender has been published and it provides a platfomr for 365 contemporary designers, photographers, arcitects, illustrators, fashion designers and artists. This shows the diversity of the creativity in The Hague. You can find my contribution on May 14th.

22 Oct 2013 | My gallery has a new venue. After 1,5 years of project based exhibitions without an own space, RAM will open her doors at the van Vollenhovenstraat 14, 3016 BH Rotterdam. Opening at 10 nov at 17 hrs. Welcome!

13 May 2013 I During the Poetry International Festival, Poetry International and many galleries from Rotterdam present new, exciting fusions of lagnuage and art during the second edition of the Language & Art Gallery Tour. Every day starting at 2 pm you’ll find suprising installations, paintings, books, experiments etc of reputable and up and coming artists.

Route du Nord 7-9 June

13 May 2013 I On 7, 8 and 9 June 2013 Rotterdam Noord celebrates again 3 days full of art, music and literature. Some of my newest work will be shown so come and have a look!

The eleventh edition of Route du Nord will take place this year in a brand new location, the so-called Zomerhofkwartier at the former station Hofplein. Re-known artists but also new promising talent will present their most contemporary creations corresponding to the festival theme Multiples.

Happening at the Beatrixpark Amsterdam / Kunstvlaai 2012

03 dec 2012 I On Saturday the 24th and the 1st of December you were able to visit the Beatrixpark in Amsterdam to see the ‘Malieveldinitiatief’ organised by chmkoome’s blog. Every saturday between 11 and 12 am the Malieveld in The Hague will be used to show art indepentdently of the ‘classical context of art’ and to try to capture or even conquer the artwork again.
At the Kunstvlaai 2012 this happening was moved from The Hague to the Beatrixpark in Amsterdam (close to the St.Nicolaaslyceum). I’ve participated on the 1st of dec. by standing next to every performance, action or artwork with my neonpink whatever-word. Click on the images to see a few more, or on het malieveld initiatief.

25 sept 2012 I A large (29,7 x 34 cm) and heavy (almost 3 kilo’s) artcalendar: Every day the GHKK 2013 shows a work of a contemporary artist from The Hague. An independent expert jury selected 365 artists, desighners, photographers, architects etc. You’ll find my contribution on the 6th of Sept.

The calendar is for sale at several book- and museumshops troughout The Hague.
